Screw Conveyor

Screw conveyor: definition

A screw conveyor is a handling mechanism for various materials. It consists of a cylinder containing a tight-fitting screw which transports the material through its turning motion. Powdery, grainy or moist substances are ideal for a screw conveyor whereas glutinous and lumpy ones are less suited.

Screw conveyor in the woodworking industry

The screw conveyor in its earliest form, the Archimedes' screw, has been used to pump water up from a lake or river as far back as the 3rd century B.C. In the woodworking industry it has been used for over a century, mainly to convey small particles of wood from one place to another. Since the amount of material which can be transported per minute depends on the angle of inclination, it is best to use a screw conveyor with a moderate incline.
